Something a little different: Case Study for BOSS

Challenge

BOSS, the British Oil Security Syndicate, is a leading debt recovery service for forecourt operators.

The company tackles the crime of drive-offs and repeat offenders who claim to have no means of payment when filling up with fuel. Alongside this, they provide an essential function for forecourts to support and recoup funds from customers that have genuinely forgotten to bring any form of payment.

Although different to our usual ecommerce clients, we brought the company on board in October 2021 as they were looking for a trusted fulfilment provider to ensure they could reliably supply their debt recovery forms to petrol stations across the UK. These forms are intrinsic to the work they do, ensuring that forecourts can capture the information needed to supply to the BOSS Head Office for debt recovery purposes – resulting in more than 75% of overall debt recovery to be achieved regularly.

There were 2 main challenges that BOSS presented us with – they didn’t have an ecommerce platform that could integrate within our systems, and they needed to record the batch number of each and every pad shipped out so that they could track them to keep forecourts accountable.

We were eager to rise to the challenge and do our part to maintain the smooth operation of this largely unknown, but incredibly important service.

Solution

Although many of the partners we work with use well-known shopping cart software such as Shopify or Woo Commerce that can integrate with our systems, we are by no means limited to only working these platforms.

Instead, BOSS are able to send us regular CSV files that capture orders, which we seamlessly upload to our system to ensure accurate picking, packing and posting. In fact, this method still allows the company to use the ‘myPackSmart’ portal in exactly the same way as any other retailer – meaning they still have full visibility to track and manage orders in real time.

We also have the ability to track the batch numbers of every pad – recording which pad went to which petrol station. With around 150 – 200 pads being sent every month, this is extremely important and means that BOSS can be confident that their records are accurate, with a forecourt on the M3 (for example) matching the exact batch number we provide.

Since we can handle this easily for them, our partnership with the company has been both straightforward and longstanding. While it might lack the bells and whistles of some of our other fulfilment work, we are immensely grateful that we get to play a small part in supporting petrol stations in the UK to combat forecourt crime.
