How MusicSmart is Helping Independent Artists Like Charlie Ward Reach New Audiences

For independent musicians, getting your music heard is only part of the challenge. Building an audience, creating merchandise, fulfilling orders and finding opportunities to perform can all become part of the job when you’re trying to grow without the backing of a major label.

It’s something we understand particularly well at MusicSmart, which is why we’re passionate about supporting independent artists both through our music fulfilment services and through opportunities that help emerging talent reach new audiences.

One artist we’ve been delighted to support is Kenilworth singer-songwriter Charlie Ward, whose music career has enjoyed a remarkable few months following appearances at Godiva Festival and on national television.

Now, with appearances at CarFest and Camper Calling ahead of him, Charlie’s story shows just how quickly things can develop when independent artists get the right opportunities and support around them.

From Godiva Calling to the Main Stage

Charlie returned to music in 2024 following a break from performing and soon entered Godiva Calling, the emerging talent competition associated with Coventry’s Godiva Festival.

MusicSmart sponsored the singer-songwriter category as part of our commitment to supporting independent and emerging musicians.

After winning his category, Charlie earned the opportunity to perform on the main stage at Godiva Festival. He and the other competition winners were also invited to perform in front of fans at our own Live Lounge.

It proved to be an important step.

The experience gave Charlie the confidence to put himself forward for a much bigger opportunity: appearing on Channel 4’s Your Song.

National Television Exposure on Channel 4’s Your Song

Your Song gives singers the opportunity to perform on a pop-up stage while, unknown to them, professional artists are watching their performance.

Charlie was selected for the programme and performed his original song “Changes”, earning praise from Sam Ryder and Paloma Faith.

The exposure helped introduce his music to a much wider audience – and things haven’t exactly slowed down since.

Charlie describes the months following his television appearance as “manic”, with new bookings and opportunities arriving as more people discover his music.

That momentum has now resulted in festival bookings at CarFest and Camper Calling, giving Charlie and his band another opportunity to perform in front of new audiences this summer.

Charlie said:

“Winning Godiva Calling and appearing on Your Song really opened doors for me, and getting booked onto CarFest and Camper Calling is massive for me and my band.

“Getting that exposure can be so tricky as an unsigned artist, so any support your suppliers can give you can make all the difference.”

Supporting Independent Artists Beyond Music Fulfilment

For us, supporting artists isn’t simply about getting an order out of the warehouse.

MusicSmart works with independent artists, bands, labels and management teams on the practical side of selling directly to fans – from pre-order releases and online stores to physical music, merchandise and worldwide shipping.

But we also understand that independent artists often need flexibility and practical support as opportunities arise.

Charlie experienced exactly that ahead of a recent show when he needed a run of branded T-shirts produced at short notice.

Through our print-on-demand service, we were able to get the merchandise produced in time for the performance.

The result?

Every T-shirt sold on the night.

Charlie said:

“Music Smart have been there whenever I’ve needed them, whether that was turning around merchandise in time for a show or sharing what I’m doing and helping more people discover my music.

“There are plenty of businesses that sponsor events, but Music Smart cares about the artists they’re working with. They want to see people succeed. For independent musicians, having people and businesses in your corner like that is so important.”

Making Merchandise Easier for Independent Musicians

Merchandise can be an important additional revenue stream for independent artists, but traditional merchandise production can also create a problem.

Ordering large quantities upfront means committing cash before you know exactly what will sell – and potentially being left with boxes of unsold stock.

Print-on-demand provides another option.

MusicSmart’s current print-on-demand service includes T-shirts, hoodies and tote bags with no minimum order quantities, alongside the option of warehousing and pick, pack and post fulfilment.

For growing artists, that means merchandise can be produced more flexibly without necessarily committing to large production runs.

And when combined with music fulfilment, online-store support and worldwide shipping, artists can spend less time dealing with logistics and more time concentrating on their music.

Building Long-Term Partnerships With Artists

Charlie’s progress has demonstrated exactly why MusicSmart wants to support emerging musicians.

She said:

“It’s been so great to see how far Charlie has come since he won Godiva Calling.

“As Music Smart, we provide all sorts of music fulfilment services for artists, but we care about giving something back to independent musicians and providing a platform for their talent. Championing independent music is something we really care about.”

That relationship between industry knowledge and fulfilment is an important part of the MusicSmart approach.

Alongside storage, picking, packing and worldwide distribution, MusicSmart supports services including pre-order releases, direct-to-fan online stores, limited editions and UK and Ireland chart reporting.

Seánna added:

“We’re fortunate that we understand the music industry as well as fulfilment, merchandise and distribution, so we can offer practical advice to our music clients.

“Seeing Charlie go from our Live Lounge and the Godiva Festival main stage to national television and major festivals has been incredible to watch, and we’re really excited to see where he goes from here.”

Music Fulfilment and Merchandise Support for Independent Artists

Charlie’s story is ultimately his own – but we’re proud to have played a small part in it.

For independent musicians, having trusted partners behind the scenes can make it easier to take advantage of opportunities when they arrive, whether that’s fulfilling a new release, getting merchandise ready for a show or delivering orders directly to fans.

If you’re an independent artist, band, label or management company looking for support with music fulfilment, merchandise, print-on-demand or direct-to-fan distribution, contact the MusicSmart team about how we can help.
